Postdoctoral Position in Plant Genomics

A postdoctoral position in Solanaceae genomics is available in the laboratory of C. R. Buell in the Department of Plant Biology at Michigan State University (http://buell-lab.plantbiology.msu.edu/). The candidate will work on funded projects involving structural, functional and comparative genomics of the Solanaceae (see http://solanaceae.plantbiology.msu.edu/, http://solcap.msu.edu/) and work with bioinformatics staff, lab technicians, and students within the Buell laboratory. The postdoctoral fellow will be involved in whole genome shotgun sequencing of potato, transcript profiling using next generation sequencing, genome annotation and analyses, and translational genomics. A Ph. D. degree in plant biology, genetics, genomics, and/or bioinformatics is required. Experience in Solanaceae and/or genomics preferred but not required. The position is available immediately.

Postdoctoral Position in Microbial Plant Pathogen Genomics

A postdoctoral position in microbial plant pathogen genomics and bioinformatics is available in the laboratory of C. R. The candidate will assume responsibility for the Comprehensive Phytopathogen Genome Resource (http://cpgr.plantbiology.msu.edu/) and for liaising with collaborators and the community on annotation of microbial plant pathogen genomes.

A Ph. D. degree in plant pathology, microbial biology, genetics, genomics, and/or bioinformatics is required. Experience in microbial genomics and/or bioinformatics required. Position in Bioinformatics At Michigan State University

A bioinformatics position is available in the laboratory of C. R. Buell in the Department of Plant Biology at Michigan State University (http://buell-lab.plantbiology.msu.edu/). The Buell lab is focused on genomics and bioinformatics in plant and plant pathogen genomes. Current projects include funded projects involving annotation of the rice genome (http://rice.plantbiology.msu.edu/), genome sequencing of plants and plant pathogens, (http://solanaceae.plantbiology.msu.edu/; http://pythium.plantbiology.msu.edu/), comparative Solanaceae genomics (http://solanaceae.plantbiology.msu.edu/), and genomics of plant pathogens (http://cpgr.plantbiology.msu.edu/). The bioinformaticist will be responsible for a wide range of bioinformatics and software development tasks on a subset of these projects. Required bioinformatics knowledge and skills include knowledge of the algorithms and tools of genome annotation, sequence alignment, and comparative genomics. These positions require the ability to evaluate new bioinformatics tools and to optimize performance of existing ones. Knowledge of bioinformatics, genomics, genetics, and molecular biology required.

The position is also responsible for a range of data handling tasks such a creating and maintaining analysis pipelines and quality checking the results, parsing and formatting data from various sources, converting data formats, ensuring scalability of pipelines on large data sets in a distributed computing environment, using NCBI and other online bioinformatics databanks. Other software development tasks include creation of web sites, dynamic web pages and tools, and maintaining existing programs and pipelines.

Required Skills:
Platforms: Experience with UNIX or a UNIX-like platform (Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris)
Bioinformatics Programs: Experience with multiple common bioinformatics programs such as BLAST, GMAP, Exonerate, HMMER, CAP3, RepeatMasker, Maker, muscle, phred, phrap, consed, fgenesh, genscan and/or vmatch.
Programming Languages: Strong knowledge of at least one scripting language (Perl, Python, Ruby, or PHP), Experience with C, C++, or Java is desirable.
Web Development: PHP or CGI programming (Perl, Python, or Ruby). HTML, CSS, Javascript.
Databases: SQL, Experience with a RDBMS such as MySQL, Postgres, Sybase, or Oracle.
Biological Knowledge: Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Genetics, Genomics, Molecular Biology
Communication Skills: Ability to present project data (orally and written). Ability to contribute to project meetings.
Other Skills: Ability to work in a team environment. Demonstrated ability to multi-task as required. Ability to read scientific literature pertinent to job. Mentoring of other staff required.
